Maintenance Q...

I was wondering how often it is needed for an aircraft such as a 747-400(or any plane for that matter) to change the oil, and recharge its battery...

Engine oil is never normally changed, it's just topped up. Generally an engine will "burn" about a pint of oil an hour.

The battries are continously trickle charged when ever the main a/c electrical system is powered.

The oil in turbine engines is not subject to conamination from combustion like it is in a piston engine. so it not changed on a regular basis. The oil is just topped off when needed. The oil filter gets changed every couple of hundred flight hours, +/- a few depending on the type of engine.

Hi Jack09, Buzz here. Well, on the Boeings that we have at UAL, we take care of things like that at 200 hour, and 500 hour intervals.
Oil doesn't get changed unless we'll make a big mess (oil pump change). But the filter gets changed every other the 500 hour "B" check. As was mentioned, it doen't collect the mositure and make acids like "Cream Of Dinosaur Soup" oils.... it's synthetic.
Batteries on most of our aircraft are ni-cads, every few A checks (200 hour intervals) it gets swapped with a fresh battery and the battery shop gets to deep cycle it. The battery chargers sense the volts and replenish after an APU start, or whenever the volts drop below 28 volts.

On most USAF fighter-type aircraft the oil is analyzed after every flight. Only when the results of the analysis (known as "Burning the SOPS") are known, is the jet okayed for the next mission-assuming the mission is training rather than combat.
