When a flight is designated as "Lifeguard," what is that in reference to?

"Lifeguard" refers to the fact that there are transplantable, and perishable vital organs on board (corneas, hearts, kidneys, etc). This is added to your callsign so that you get "priority" handling by ATC.

For instance MIDEX 67 would report in: "Center, MIDEX LIFEGUARD Six-Seven"

Lifeguard is the call sign that is used for Medevac flights. This way they get priority handling from ATC. Transplants are considered just another Medevac flight in this case. Usually you use the Lifeguard designation if you are outbound to pick up a paitent or if you are inbound with him on board. An aircraft returning empty usually doesn't use that.

I think that most companies just use the Lifeguard designation and then their Aircraft N number like we do. Instead of two seperate callsigns but don't hold me to that. I just know what we do.

Due to the hours I work (The graveyard) I would say that 85% of the flights I dispatch are Lifeguard flights.

TWA 800 was a lifeguard. On the CVR they said "TWA 800 heavy lifeguard."
Up, up and away!
