"Routine" is the best way to describe the job. I'm sure some pilots get bored because they just turn on the autopilot and order their coffee, but at the airline I fly for, the aircraft are not equipped with autopilots, so we hand-fly 100% of the time. It keeps us from getting bored.

Do you know what I mean?

There is no better job. At times it can be boring, at times it can be demanding (usually during recurrent sim training). I spend alot of time away from home(2-4 days a week). To quote my wife "you don't have a job, you have a hobby that pays well".

Boring is good. And 99.9% of the time, that's the way it is. It's the other 0.1% un-boring stuff that is not so good!

Latechpilot - what do you fly? Enjoy it while you can, because glass and autopilots is the way of the future!

Best Regards,

Buff

I believe this quote (From Commerical pilots) sums it up perfectly:

"Flying, Sure beats working for a living"

Buff,

I fly a Beechcraft 1900 D. The airplanes were built the same time as the 777, still with no autopilot. I think it has something to do with weight. I'm sure an autopilot would add almost 100 pounds to the empty weight of the aircraft. Most GA aircraft are better equipped than the Beech. No GPS, FMS, INS...just good old VOR/DME and ADF. Flying it keeps my basic skills up. It does have GPWS, TCAS, Radar Altimeter, WX Radar, EFIS, etc. No automation whatsoever.

Not everyone wants to be a pilot! The more I see of the life our regional pilots have, the happier I am to be an engineer. They fly the same routes, day after day, back and forth, then get to stay overnight in some dinky little town. I don't like to see people putting others down in this forum, and I'm not doing it either. A job is only boring if you think it is. More power to them if they like it, but it is not for me.

Your not alone, flying isn't for alot of people. Once you get past the regional stage it does get better.

Ok this is probably off the subject a bit but what do you think is the best way to become a comercial pilot, I was thinking of trying to get a bachelor of science and aviation, any suggestions would be great.

Pilots often say things about their jobs similar to: a pilot lives in a world of accute fear and rank boredom.

What is important ultimately is that a pilot can justify being scared to death, but s/he cannot ever justify being bored to death!

Ps-stark terror is superior to complacently hitting Pikes Peak.

I was trying to remember that phrase. You said it well. Thanks.

Are you a flight engineer on a C-5? If so, do you sometimes fly over Kentucky? C-5s seem to fly over my garage from time to time.

Well I doubt that it's a boring job.Pilots go all over the world for free.I believe that's exciting enough. All pilots that i've spoken to say that they enjoy their job.
