Logo Lights?

Everyone knows what they are: the lights that iluminate the logo on an aircrafts tail.
My question is, which aircraft have them? And sometimes when im spotting, ill see for example a CO 737-300, and a US 737-300 and the CO will have its logolight on and the US wont. Is it up to the pilots to choose whether or not to turn it on? and last but not least, are the logo lights on for the duration of the entire flight? Thanks in advance.

As far as I know, on Boeings anyway, they are optional, airline-specified equipment. The US aircraft may not have even had them installed.

It's been awhile since my airline had any so equipped, and I can't recall if there was a separate switch for the logo lights, or whether they came on concurrently with the landing, runway turnoff, or L/E inspection lights.

Some airlines that do have them may indeed keep them on for the entire flight, but I doubt it. In some areas of the world, especially at night, I imagine one might desire all the collision avoidance help they can get...

On the A320s I fly, the logo light is combined with the NAV lights. The NAV light switch has three positions, OFF, 1, 2.
OFF is self-explanatory, 1 switches on the NAV lights (1 set) 2 brightens the NAV lights by turning on the second set and turns on the logo lights.
Position 1 is used during daylight conditions, at night the switch is set at 2. The logo lights then remain on during the entire flight.

AirTran's DC-9's were different. Some had it and some did not. I am pretty sure that they were not required, but I seem to remember some not having them and some did. I'm not exactly sure about that one, though.

We've got logolights on the MD-80's and MD-90's I fly for SAS.All of them.
We're recommended to use them during darkness,and turning them off when passing 10000ft climbing,but it's up to the pilot whether he does or not.In areas of heavy traffic,i.e. London,Paris,etc.,we tend to keep them on for longer periods.BTW our switch is a single one on the overhead panel,independent of other light switches.
Many Ground Controls use phrases like "Follow the second BA 757 from your left to holding so and so",and that's when the logolights come in handy.

Uhmm.. to the best of my knowlegdge, all of Airtran's nines have logo lights, however, the location of the switch in the cockpit is different depending on the origin of the aircraft. For example, the ships 901 thru 925, the old Delta birds, are signifigantly different in cockpit layout than ships 930 thru 939, the old Turkish airlines birds.

On the 747-400 they are located in the stabiliser and shine up on to the tail. There are two floodlights on each stab to keep the tail illuminated when the stab moves. Normally they are turned off passing 10,000 feet, however, in areas of dubious ATC they are left on all night for 'see and avoid'!
The 737 classics have logo lights as an option. You can tell if thet are installed by looking at the wingtip of the aircraft...if you see a diamond shaped fairing on the training edge that contains the floodlight for the tail. Some 757s also have this option.

Logolights are there to make some publicity for the company, but also to help ATC ground control to see what aircrafts are taxying.

I know some companies try to save some money by not switching on the logo lights during the night, but I feel this is downgrading the safety somewhat.

Logolights shouldn't be an option, they should be required during all night operations.
