Would A Safire S-26 Need A GPU

Sat Jan 27, 2001 1:56 am

Just a quick question:

Rather than me calling Safire and asking, does anybody here think a Safire S-26 would require a GPU to start the engines? I can't see an A/C that small having an APU, so how do the engines start? If you need reference please look at http://www.safireaircraft.com.

Thanks
Peter

My guess would be that electric starters would be fitted, perhaps even starter/generators. An APU adds alot of weight and complexity, something that the designers seem to want to avoid. A GPU could be used to provide electrical power to start the engines or, providing they have enough juice, the aircraft's own batteries.

You'll probably start the engines with battery power but I think you would want the GPU for electrical power for preflight etc. Turbine engines are expensive and I doubt you would want to burn time just for electrics.

Probably would be a starter/generaltor combination using a 24VDC ground plug in.
