Denver's New Runway

With Denver building it's new 16,000 foot runway, I began wondering. If a high elevation runway is long enough to allow a fully loaded takeoff, will it produce an increase in range? My thinking here is that a DEN takeoff saves 5,000 feet of climb in a particularly inefficient altitude for jets. Is the effect significant at all?

It might take 2-3 minutes to get up to 5000 feet, the fuel burn for that amount of time is nothing at all! That is probably about the amount they add for errors!

Does any one know for sure when the new runway will be finished? The groundwork has been laid out for years... i heard the FAA will not give any more money to build it until DEN stops getting noise violations.. just hearsay though.

Dang all the runways that i here that are being built are long 16,000ft dang that is a long runway if you go off the end of that you have probloms.WHY SO LONG? does Denvers new runway have a dissplaced threshhold or what?  Wow!

If you noticed, all the runways at DEN are at least 12,000 feet long, and that's for a reason. The high altitude means that planes require longer runways for takeoff. I think that the air is less dense and that's the reason why. I'd apprciate someone elaborating more aobut this. Also, I know that SLC is also pretty high up and one day a while back, our flight was delayed b/c the temp. was really hot and this coupled with the altitude didn't allow the old L1011 to takeoff. Is this common?

The runway is schedueled to be completed between the end of this year, and beginning of next year. The new runway will be the longest commercial runway in the world, and will allow a fully loaded 747-400 to take off. Currently, 747s have weight restrictions out of Denver. To my knowledge, the only aircraft out of Denver that does not have a weight restriction is Air Wisconsin's BAe 146s. The rest do, including Air Wisconsin's Canadair Regional Jets.

SLC's altitude is about 4200 ft.above sea level...just an FYI...

Too bad the leaders of Denver didn't just extend one of stapleton's old runways farther into the rocky mountain arsenal, could've saved 5 billion dollars and we could have had loaded 744's flying out of DEN years ago... The only thing DIA has done is allowed simultaneous IFR approaches. Don't get me wrong, DIA is a nice airport, but 5 billion dollars is alot of money to pay to replace an airport that didn't need replacing.

The airport here in Mexico City is at an altitude of 7341ft MSL, the longest runway is about 12600ft long, and we have daily 744, 742, 777 and 767 flights to London, Paris, Frankfurt, Amsterdam, Madrid, Santiago de Chile and Sao Paulo.
