IL62M Main Wheels Sprayed.

Fri Apr 27, 2001 9:45 am

Was just watching an Aerofloat IL62M parked near the gate.
I noticed that the main wheels were smoking.
Def meaning the brakes has overheated.
The ground crew was spraying the brakes with water.

Is that permitted. Is it not dangerous to spray water on hot wheels.

My tech books have a warning that prohibits the use of water on hot brakes, due to the risk of explosion. The only meathod we are allowed to use for cooling hot brakes is forced air. What was the operator, that may explain a lot.

Aerofloat was the operator.

I was surprised they used water for cooling.
Unfortunately I did not get the opportunity to ask them why.

You are right. Spelling error.
It is Aeroflot.
But still the question remains.Isn't it wrong to spray water over heated brakes.

Yes, the brake unit(s) could explode due to the thermal shock

Hit them with water and if you are lucky all you will do is crack the disks because of the shock cooling on just the parts of the disk the water hits.

Air doesn't have that shock capability and cools more evenly.

Galaxy5,

It is interesting that you say your a/c are being disinfected with a Chlorine/water mix because Boeing & Airbus have told us not to allow such a solution to be used as it causes corrosion & hydrogen embrittlement if it gets onto the brakes/wheel hubs & landing gear structure

I was about to say......That clorine should do a wonder job as far as corrosion goes.
