the 737 ng's, at least Delta's, have your standard jaw lock towbar attachment.

The -800s i ahve delt with have the standard 737 jaw type. Though one of the tow bars i tried attaching would work fine on the classics but not on the NG's while all the other bar's were interchangable. the one that did not want to clamp down was the one thats jaw closes in from both ends, the one that worked easily on both was the other style. Could just be a GSE related problem with the one bar not working.

Most aircraft families retain commonality when it comes to towbars so airlines can keep costs down. The towbar for a 737 works on the Classic and on the NGs. The towbar for a 717 is the same one you would use for a DC-9, MD-88, etc.

Agree with the fact that the -800´s have the standard type of attachment, but nevertheless I´ve also encountered that very same problem...in my case it was nothing wrong with the towbar but the NLG taxilight mounting bracket was one I´ve never seen before..thus making my first attempt to connect a towbar, unsucessful thanx to the size of the TB head cause it wouldn´t pass the NLG taxilight.
After nearly all the foul words I know(due to stress cause´ the a/c had it´s beacon´s turned on,the jetway was pulled away and it was more than ready for push)..I set off to try and locate another towbar....five min´s later I found one with a smaller head that did fit and the delay reason filed was "lack of/break down, ground equippment"...
Nowadays we use the TBL(towbarless)tugs for pushback procedures of nearly all kinds of a/c´s handled...in very few cases a regular "old fashion" pushback´s carried out(with towbar&tug)....

Nothing more emberssing then getting ready to push an a/c and have a tow bar problem or have the sheerpin pop during a push and see the aircraft roll back with part of the tow bar attached. The stupidest thing i did was drove off with a towbar attached to the front of a pushback and one attached to the back, i was taking the tow bar to another gate and didnt even look to see if one was left on the front. i drove forward hit a cement support and snaped the sheer pin. We had some towbars over X-mas that got iced up and wouldnt work.. Captain came down and said he would need a push due to the sliprey ramp, we had the towbar had the tug but a/c set there for 20 minutes while GSE took the towbar inside to melt the ice off of it...
