Cramped In The Cockpit?

Tue Jun 12, 2001 1:57 pm

Do you pilots ever find yourself to be way too cramped in the cockpit? I know that the seat must be restricting to an extent but is it to the point where it is too uncomfortable or what? The foot space seems very uncomfortable to me because of the divider thing. But whats it really like? Do you guys find yourselves standing around in the cockpit just stretching your legs? Thanks all!

The longer the flight, the more cramped the cockpit. It is important to be able to get up and stretch, especially on flights in excess of 1 hour in cruise. Yes, there are times when I get up just to stand up and walk around - much the same as you as a passenger would on a long flight.

Best Regards,

Haha..certainly wish i could stand up and stretch my legs in the archer/152. 3 hours in cruise w/o an autopilot in a small airplane does get cramped, but you get used to it. You learn the wierdest ways to stretch your legs and arms.

In the big jets it isnt too much of a problem to move around.

Now here's a cockpit you can move around in. Access round the OUTSIDE of the seats

Try it from a mechanics point of view. Try climbing in and out and catching your leg on the seat belt attach point. Ive got a bruise on my leg that hasnt gone away in 14 yrs--lol..JT PS, that VC-10 has a bunch of windows? I count 13. I know its off the subject, but how many are heated?

If anyone can dig up a cockpit picture of a Boeing 377, you will see that it has enough room in it that the one could get out of his pilots seat and do a couple of laps.
It's one of the largest cockpits I have ever seen.

I have to agree with JT-- I get in and out of DC-9's and 10's all the time. Hmm, lemme see, left seat, left foot here, turned this way, no that won't work, ok I got it. Oucch!! I think I've got permanent knots on my head too. And then I get in the right seat. Nothing works the same.

The 3 w/screens are electrically anti-iced and de misted with warm air, while the 4 sidescreens are electrically de-misted

I was in the 152 number 10 for takeoff at my local airport and it took approx. 45 minutes for the ATC to call me up for departure. Well, their were numerous I mean NUMEROUS planes in the pattern and numerous planes in line for takeoff. So my legs were getting numb holding the brakes for 45 minutes. Still when the power is idle, the plane can still slightly move. The problem was one of the parallel runway was closed for several months and had one available operating runway.

Gocaps16, I know how you feel I was stuck behind a broken down FedEx 310 at SNA once, I would have been about to turn around on the taxi way and go around him, if it was not for the UA 757 behind me! That delay was about 45 minutes also! I thought of it as O'hare training!

VC-10 looks like a cool airplane. Not sure I like the idea of the lav in the cockpit though. Might make a mess in rough air..JT

Whenever I'm doing a cross-country in a 152, i just slacken the belt just a wee bit, and turn diagonal.

Shoot man.. for a 45 minute ground hold in a 152, i dont see why you didnt just shut the airplane down and push it whenever the traffic moved forward. I know i would have done that definitely. We had a long ground hold one time, and i shut down and listened to com on a handheld. Saves money and gas.
