Cockpit Door: MEL Item?

This may be a strange question, but here goes:

Yesterday, I was on a DL 737 from SLC-IAH, and as we started the takeoff roll, the cockpit door flew open, like it wasn't latched properly.

It was great in that I got to see takeoff and climbout, and no one seemed too terribly concerned with it, but it did prompt this question:

Are cockpit doors or cockpit door latches MEL items? I've been on little puddlejumpers where you can see out, but I didn't know if other rules applied to the bigger boys...

Anyone know?

The cockpit door is listed in our (SAS MD-80/90 AOM) MEL list.There it says that all door functions must be operative.It does not have a Category A,B or C status determining for how long a defect can remain before it has to be fixed,so a cockpit door with a defect is a "no-go" item.
The door opening during take-off is a fairly normal event.Usually it hasn't been closed properly.

A 737 MEL here in the USA mentions:

52-8 Flight Deck Door Lock Solenoid

May be inoperative provided:

A.The door can be locked and unlocked manually

Thus, the door isn't deferrable, but the electric latch is. The back-up system for manual locking/unlocking is a good old-fashioned bolt latch, here anyways...

FBU is quite correct that thse doors sometimes pop open. The reason nobody seems concerned is that (1) pilots are obviously not going to initiate an abort for one, and (2) the forward F/As are not going to slam it shut so as not to startle the flightcrew with a sudden noise from behind them when they least expect it on takeoff roll. Sort of a distraction...  Big grin

The Master MEL (MMEL) for the 737 can be found at:

That makes sense as far as not being concerned about it, not aborting, not startling the guys up front, etc.

Thanks for your info. Just wanted to see if it was a MEL item or not... in any case, it was cool to see...

A locking flight deck door is a must have item. A broken, missing or malfunctioning door/lock is a no-go item. I personally have seen an otherwise perfect aircraft sit for over twelve hours waiting for door lock parts.
