MD-11 Vs A340

Sat Aug 11, 2001 1:25 pm

Everyone says that a part of an aircrafts effciency depends on the amount of engines it has. So how did the A340 beat the MD-11 wich has one less engine. Just curious.

Its a case of horses for corses the MD11 with three big engines might be slightly overpowered, with the extra engine giving a weight penalty.

The A340's engines are small by comparison but again the big twins are probably more effecient on shorter sectors.

Ejay, there is more to it than just engines. The A340 has a wing designed in the late 80's/early 90's. The MD11 has a DC10 wing that was designed in the late 60's, with wing tip extentions, and winglets. With both aircraft having very modern and efficeint engines, it comes down to who has the better wing. The A340 (and A330, which uses the same wing) win hands down. Also, from a marketing standpoint, Airbus delievered what they promised with the A340, while Douglas has never got the MD11 to the range they promised.

Take care

If MD had put out the cash for a new wing then it would have had lower burn than a B-777 and history would have been different. Penny wise and pound foolish, but then they didn't have a lot of options towards the end, sadly.
