A320 Etops

Sat Aug 18, 2001 7:23 am

Does anyone know if any of the A320 family(319,320,321) have been certified for ETOPS? I know that Aloha uses 737-700 on flights to the mainland. I'm sure they have the range for over water flights since JetBlue uses 320's from JFK to the westcoast as well as America West using 320's to PHX and LAS.

On the Airbus homepage ( http://www.airbus.com ) you can find a special ETOPS-page in the A330/340-section. Here Airbus points out that "all wide-bodied Airbus twins (A300-600, A310 and A330) are type-certificated to 180 minutes and all A320 Family aircraft to 120 minutes."

The A-320 has an ETOPS rating, but airlines don't fly a narrow body a/c like the -320 for an oceanic crossing.

Well Kiss the L1011, they actually did. I remember that Conair flew charter flights from Scandinanvia to FLL a fey years ago (with a fuel stop somewhere probably in YQX or BGR).

Continental fly the 757-200 from Newark to Glasgow and back every day.

Ansett used to fly A320 ETOPS from Perth to Christmas Island starting in 1993. According to their website they's not serving Christmas Island anymore.

Other airlines I know of that operate two-engine 100-150 seats aircrafts over long stretches of water are Air Pacific & Aloha Airlines.

Air Pacific is flying the 737-800 from Nadi to Vancouver; a distance of 10,000 km almost all over water.

Aloha have recently started flying the 737-700 from Honolulu to California.

So obviously there's a need for small ETOPS airplanes .

About 3 years ago Canada 3000 operated YYZ-CPH with A320's.

Continental flies 757s into AMS as well (at least on some flights, they also use 767s).
Some time ago I saw a Canada3000 A32x at AMS. Probably rented to someone else, but I never saw her again after that, only A330s
I wish I were flying

We at C3000 used the A320 from YYZ-CPH with a tech. stop in KEF. The aircraft were certified to 138 mins. ETOPS. This is the longest ever given for the A320. The route was dropped 3yrs ago and the ETOPS was not maintained on our aircraft. We will soon take delivery of 9 319's the second group of 3 to arrive spring '02 will be extended range. Looks like we will be ETOPS once again on the narrow body fleet...possibly YVR-HNL.

I think Air Na'Uru runs 737's from Australia to Na'Uru, which is quite a ways overwater, how much I'm not sure, though. A brief digression: the island is an atoll made up of thousands of years of birdshit that has transformed into phosphates that have been so heavily mined that a) the residents have only a quarter of the island left to live on, and are considering leaving and b) they have the highest per capita income of any nation in the world.
Bizarre story for the day!
