Where Are The APU's Located On The BAe 146/Avro RJ

Mon Aug 20, 2001 8:27 am

I know that the BAe 146 and Avro RJ have four APUs. Where exactly are they located?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Regards.

there are 4 Avco-Lycoming ALF-502 APUs under each wing, the exhaust points aft and by pointing it to the aft, our friend newtons laws of motion kick in and the opposite reaction thing makes the aircraft move forward
this thrust counteracts the drag. and not to get into aerodynamics, but the aircraft magicaly lifts off the ground thanks to the ingeniuus placement of the 4 apu's since they did this the 146 doesnt require any ENGINES!

It's located in the empenage aft of the rear pressure bulkhead. Mfg. by Garrett, now a days known as Honeywell. When running at it's max it is capable of powering up one each; AC gen. DC gen, and two AC packs. However, if you try and utilize this unit to it's full capacity it is likely to explode and expell the turbine rotor right out the "S" duct onto the ramp as I have have witnessed.

Indeed-
the BAe146 has 5 turbine engines:
one in the tail and 4 under the wing.

It's not as much of a joke as you think. Those cores are also used as APUs.

Good point...but just because the A340's engine core can be used as an APU on a CRJ doesn't mean the A340 has four haird.....APUs!

The Avro's cores, not the 340's.

Those references to the A340 (200 & 300) having 5 APUs are just plain unfair. Everyone knows those things under their wings are hairdryers.

Hairdryers with 32,000 lbs thrust each. Don't get your head too close to the nozzle.  Wink

No.. the only APU is mounted back in the tail...but the 'joke' of this thread is the 4 engines used on the BAe 146 and Avro's are also used in their core form as APU's on bigger aircraft.

I thought the engines used on the BAe146/Avro RJ are actually derivatives of helicopter engines...?

Yes indeed, the Lycoming T55 as used in the Chinook, but that's not such a good joke, apparently.  Smile
