Water Evacuation

On the safety cards we see how to perform a water evacuation, but has there ever been a time when a REAL water evacuation has taken place? Also why is it that on certain planes you can't evacuate from the rear doors (e.g 737) but on some you can't evacuate from the wing (A320). Also on the safety cards they say for land evac. you have to inflate the slide, but in water evac. the slide deflates automaticaly! Also what is the situation when a land evac. takes place? Any ideas?

To answer your first question...YES, there has been a time when a REAL water evacuation has taken place.

>For Example: If you go to Airliners.net's home page, in the middle you'll see the title "latest article". Just below that, you should click on "Other Articles" At the bottom of the list, there's an article called "The DC-8 That Was To Young To Die".

This story is about a DC-8 that "ditched" into the waters of the San Francisco Bay area. I believe it occured in 1968. There were no deaths, and the DC-8 was repaired. According to the article, it's still flying today.

The restrictions on what doors to use in a ditch situation is usually determined by the aircraft tendency to sink or flood in a certain way. On the DC-10, the aft doors are not to be used as they will drastically accelerate the flooding of the aircraft as the aircraft will sit tail low in the water (assuming the plane is still in one piece!)

Also, Ethiopian 767 ditching a few years back, after running out of fuel due to hijack.

Many people initially survived, but drowned because they inflated their life vests, so couldn't get out of the cabin filled with water.

Lesson: that's why you are supposed to inflate them AFTER you exit the aircraft.

The China Airlines 747-400 that went off the runway at Kai Tak had some rafts put out as it was quite a way into the harbour. Some slides were still attached though, as a passing tug boat nudged the aircraft back to the edge of the runway, where most of the photos of it were taken. However it was later towed back out so it would not be as much of an obstruction for the departing aircraft.

An Aerolineas Argentina 732 ditched just short of the runway ay Ushiana AR several years ago. There are pics here on Anet of it floating in the water.

In addition to the China AL 744 that ditched off HKG, several other airliners have slid off the end of runways in the water.....US Airways 734 at LGA, Overseas Natl DC-10-30 at JFK, SAS DC-10-30 at JFK. These are all that come to mind.

I dumped at the gybe mark in strong winds when I looked up at a Porter Q400 on finals. Can't stop spotting.

My favorite evacuation story is of the PanAm Stratocruiser that ditched in the Pacific enroute from HNL to the mainland. There is a website that has the full story -- I don't have time to look for it right now. It happened around 1956.

Once again, in the context, Many planes do not even have an over wing exit (Like A321, A300)...in such cases, which doors are used to evacuate after a ditch in the water?

Obviously in a 321, if you open the door just behind the wing when teh a/c is floating over water...wont the water gush inside resulting in sinking of the plane?

The 146 checklist says use fwd doors only to maximise time afloat.

The ATR will float tail low leaning left or right. So as well as the type lll exits, one of the rear doors should be available.

Other ditchings - The DC-8 mentioned at SFO was JAL. Another JAL went in just short of Haneda. Also a DC-9 in the Atlantic en route to Bermuda?? springs to mind.

I wonder wshat would happen if an a/c had to ditch in the middle of the ocean, are there enough life rafts for everyone?

It could take days for ships to get to the scene!

It would not take days for ships to get to the scene. This isn't 1912 and the sinking of the Titanic.

Wasn't there a plane that went off end of runway in BOS many years ago where the cockpit broke off and 2 pax were lost as they floated away into ocean? I recall it happened in winter(?) maybe 15-20 yrs ago?
