747-1,2,300 Vs 400 Landings

I have entensively studied photo's and video's of 747 landings and it seems to me that the 1,2, & 300 models will make a rather high angle of attack final approach and landing similar to that of the DC-10 , MD-11, and L1011. The 747-400 seems to make a much lower agle of attack approach and landing similar to other aircraft like the 777 and 767. If you look at the specs, the 1,2,300's have a wingspan of 195 ft whihe the 400 has a span of 211. Could the extra lift of the 400 be what makes the low angle of attack landing possible. I would like to hear all comments and questions. Personally as a student pilot a like to make low aoa landing's bacause they facilitate much greater pilot visibility, plus the plane seems to handle better / more responsive, and a smoother landing will usually follows.

B1C17L1011 - as a former instructor my mouth fell open horror at the thought of a student pilot preferring low aoa landings. The higher speed will catch you out one day. If you ever need to go into a short field you will be out of practise with the technique.

I fully agree with your reasons for liking them, but the approach speed in the manual is there for a reason. You should be striving to land at the recommended speed rather than doing some kind of hot-dog circus act!

If the forward view really is an issue get a seat cushion!

Anyway, never noticed the difference in 747 approach deck angles, I'll be sure to look out for them. But I think you'll find the L1011 has the highest of any big jet except the Concorde (which is 11 3/4 degrees).

Good luck, and sort the landings out; you'll be a better pilot for it!

In relation to your wingspan theory, do remember that the 744 is bigger than the 741,2,3 models and probably requires the extra wing area to produce the proper ammount of lift.  Big grin

I'm not crazy, I never come in so fast that it's dangerous, and I always consider the field length. It's just that if I had to pick my style, it would be a little on the low angle of attack side instead of on the high aoa side. Besides, if you get too far on the slow side then you have to worry about the stall speed.
