Tire Marks On Runways

Sun Oct 28, 2001 10:31 am

Its clear to see that most all runways are very dirty with tire markings. Are runways ever "cleaned" off per say? I would imagine that its important that the things that are painted white (i.e. center line, distance markers, thresh hold, etc) should obviosly be clearly visible. Does it ever even get to a point where the white needs to be cleaned or even re-painted? If so, how often is this necessary?

As always, thanks again....

They closed 07R/25L at BRU during a few days in the summer and I read somewhere that they did maintenance and cleared away tiremarks, strange since it's a tarmach runway??

It's not the marks that are the problem. When the rubber starts getting built up it does have to be removed. Believe it or not, what you see as mere marks can build to about an inch thick before it must be removed. Not a whole lot of traction on solid rubber.

You can't recycle tire rubber because it's vulcanized Sleepy

Ever seen those black fake-wood garden-benches? Those are made of recycled rubber and plastics.

KaiTakFan! LOL  Big thumbs up
The best fast food at LAX is the In-n-Out by the 24R Approach Lights. Great food, great service, and great noise!

What I like about those marks is looking at those weird ones whenever I land or T.O. and steer out of the r/w.

Some start very late down the runway, quite abruptly, are very dark and sometimes go zigzagging all over the place... Then I try to imagine how this landing looked like.

At our hub's runway, I saw a new first officer leaving the very first marks on the runway, meters before any other marks, and about 2 meters after where the concrete starts. I was in the plane, powerlessly seated in the jumpseat, and wow, my buttocks kinda hurted a bit for the following hour...
If you're gonna kill those blowers on the flare and the plane is heavy and slow, PLEASE, PULL THE YOKE!!!!!

Regards, all.

I'll do my own airline. With Blackjack. And hookers. In fact, forget the airline.
