Boeing 727 Subtypes

Fri Nov 02, 2001 2:24 am

Hello everybody.
Can somebody inform me about the significance of all the different subtypes of
the 727. I mean how do you interpret the xx in 727-2xx. There are so
many different combinations. Do they indicate very small differences in
the cabin layout for instance. There are so many subtypes that I suppose
they can't mean any major differences like type of engines or stuff like that.
Maybe someone knows a URL to some web page that explains it all.
Greatful for some feedback.
Thanks, Jan Lidestrand.

What you indicate as xx, it really is the Boeing customer code. For example a Boeing 747-436 is a Boeing 747-400 for British Airways, their customer code is 36.

The airline configuration could be different on every plane, but the customer code stays the same.

But if the xx means a specific customer how come that if you look up all
aircraft of a specific type for a specific customer they differ xx-wise.
Is that because the customer has aquired aircraft from other customers.
Does the xx designation, that got determined by the original customer,
stay with the specific aircraft for the rest of it's life?
