Quick question: Most small regional jets have rear-mounted engines. Now the new generations of mid-sized to big regional jets seem to prefer the conventional underwing option. With the exception of the Tu334 (and, even though it's significantly bigger, the 717). So why did the manufacturers choose these configurations in each case? Is it for cheaper maintenance? Or are there any significant aerodynamic advantages in this size category?
Isn't the rear-mounted engine easier to achieve for a small jet (requiring less landing gear length and ground clearance, ergo less space inside the fuselage)?
