Seaqull, MD-11 Rotation Speeds

Sat Dec 15, 2001 2:29 pm

Seaqull, Hello, I just wanted to know the rotation speeds for the MD-11 aircraft on a standard day. Two years ago I flew on an Swissair MD-11 from Zurich to KLAX. I've noticed on that LCD airshow data in front of me that the ground speed indicated about 365 km/hr (197 knots) during take-off roll. Elevation was 1400 feet at Zurich airport. It seemed a little to fast, what do you think?

Depends on weight, I don't have performance charts in front of me and I don't think about the specific number all that much, so hard to recall for some reason. However, I think that heavy weight Vr doesn't generally get over 170 or so, indicated, but the lift off speed will be higher than that depending on rotation rate, etc. The speed you posted doesn't sound unreasonable to me.

im no pro or anything but i did build a MD-11 for fs2000 so Ive done alot of research and I feel my flight model is pretty good and 200kts is pretty high especially for a passenger version, I havent flown it in a while but I think my cargo version at MTOW with 200,000lbs of virtual cargo will rotate at 150kts and should be taking off at 170 or so, the passenger version weights alot less because the airlines havent convinced people to be stacked on top of each other like boxes yet, on mine i went with 254 passengers averaging 170lbs coming to 43k of people, 6604lbs of domestic baggage and 30k extra for not having a gutted interior and it performs much better but losing 100,000lbs will do that I bet liftoff is 160 at the most. now this is just a flightsim model so i cant say how accurate it is but I friend of mine whos flown MD-11's said it rotated very accuratly.

I just need numbers, thats all. I just wanted to know the average normal rotation speed on a standard day with MTOW. Thanks.  Smile

Thinking more about it, it seems to me that the max Vr is up around 174 or so.
