MCO & IAD Departure/Arrival Procedures

Wed Dec 19, 2001 5:39 am

I would appreciate any info on this topic. I've posted in the Civil Aviation Forum and for whatever reason, no one has responded. How could it be that no one has any answers?

Here you go:

I'm flying to MCO and IAD in the next week, but I'm not familiar with these airports. I'm flying LAX-MCO, MCO-IAD and IAD-SFO. Based on these flights, what DP's and STAR's will be used? Additionally, which runways are generally used for departures and arrivals? Any info regarding these airports' flight operations is appreciated. Also, are there any good places to spot near the United gates? Thanks!

These sites tend to be helpful... always use them when I travel.

A330CFBUS, thanks for the links but I already visit these sites. The information I'm seeking is: what routing in particular will I most likely be flying? Thanks.

When I flew LAX-IAD, after contacting Washington Center, shortly thereafter we were cleared to 10000' at pilot's discretion, and then cleared direct "TILLY" intersection (sp?) Not sure what STAR that would be for, as I'm not familiar with the Washington area.

According to CH 9, in IAD-LAX we took off Rwy 30, and were routed direct Capital and from there, I assume we flew under our own navigation. I'm not sure where that's supposed to be, as the nearest navaid with that name seems to be a VOR in Illinois.

Perhaps someone who's flown in/out of there can comment, but that was just my experience.

Off work and don't have data in front of me, but I'd suggest searching the net for an electronic airport facilities directory (AFD), and looning in the back under "high altitude preferred routes". The output for the city-pair (if designated) will be in the format of Rmenon's message above.

If nothing is published, lemme know, and I'll haul out some charts and take a swag at it. Just offhand, I'd venture to say that IAD-SFO is going to depart westbound over Linden (LDN) and arrive SFO via a transition to the MODesto arrival, but the enroute points may well vary daily due to winds, and or ATC's desire to segregate Bay-area traffic from LA-Basin traffic as far east as possible. For that latter reason, any pref route might well take IAD-SFO traffic over NE-WY-UT before heading for MOD.

Lemme know what you find out, or need...

Happy Holidays!

LAX-MCO
No pref route published, but you'd probably be on the LAXX3.TRM for the departure, and the OTK.LEESE9 for the arrival. This all presumes that the flight is routed over ELP and IAH. Should winds aloft dictate a more northerly route, you might even see a LOOP2.DAG and into MCO the same way.

MCO-IAD
That route previously mentioned was indeed the pref route...

IAD-SFO
No pref route either, but my best guess would be the Capital 5 DP to Linden (LDN), and then the MOD2 at SFO. Note that transitions to the MOD2 run from FMG to CZQ, so they probably get this arrival no matter whether they went via ABQ or via Wyoming..

Hope this helps, have a great holiday....

OPNLguy,

Thanks for the help. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to get the flight plan for LAX-MCO. However, I know we flew the LAXX3 Departure.

Here's the route for MCO-IAD:

MCO.MCOY7.SAV.J207.FLO.J55.TUBAS.J51.FAK.COATT4.IAD

Also, here's the beginning and end for IAD-SFO:

IAD..BUFFR.J518.DJB...J80.OAL.MOD2.SFO

However, a storm moved into the Bay Area last night and instead, we were cleared direct Coaldale, Locke 1 Arrival. It was certainly an exciting approach and we arrived on 19L.

19L is a bit different alright...

Most oddball runway configuration I ever saw at SFO (and I wish I had, in person) was one crystal clear day when the winds were howling out of the north-northwest about 30-35 knots (35030G35). Takeoffs were on 28L/R, and arrivals were getting cleared for arrivals to the 28's with a circle to land on the 01's. The delays were terrible! Must have been quite a sight to see them yanking and banking on the southeast side of the airport.
