4th Crew Member On The Concorde?

Thu Dec 27, 2001 9:53 am

As I was watching the Discovery show (on the work on getting the Concorde back in the air), I noticed that there, besides the Captain, F.O. and F.E. also was a 4th crew member situated in the corner behind the Captain and the F.E. (draw a line from their back, and you know what I mean).
What is his task? I never saw him involved in any procedures.
He can also be seen on this image

He could be a reserve crew member or a senior pilot checking out the rest of the crew.
Once you have tasted flight, you will walk the earth with your eyes turned skyward; for there you long to return

The usual crew is three, since the return to service there have been 4th and often 5th crew members. Flight Engineers getting back up to speed mostly.
Not so usual in the last few weeks, only 4 crew some of the time now.
Supernumery crew are of course usual on training and/or test flights.

Thanks mate! I figured it was something along those lines. But then, who is the guy in the pic? It was taken in 1998, so it couldn't be due to retraining.. Well, then again, it could.

Probably a new E/O training, when that pic was taken we were getting a lot of E/O's from the B747-136/DC-10 fleets being phased out then.
A few years earlier we had a shortage of E/O's!
No matter how experienced, they still had to do the 6 week conversion course for Concorde, including some time in the supernumary position shown, or the guy in the E/O seat could be the new guy being checked out.
Then there are the regular check flights for all of the flight crew.
