Delta 727 Oddity?

Tue Jan 01, 2002 1:16 am

Hey Gang. I've been spotting here in ATL quite a bit lately. I've noticed that sometimes Delta's 727's get compressor surges on touchdown when the reversers are just engaged. Is this normal? I'll usually here a "bang bang" and sometimes see a flash out of the #2 engines cascade at the same time. What causes this?

All 727's have this happen (except for the Tay powered UPS models). A quick power adjustment from half-power to idle followed by a quick reverse will sometimes cause this. Also in crosswinds, the engine not getting a good wind (sheltered behind the fuselage) is another perfect situation for a compressor stall. I've heard mechanics say the JT8D can handle a compressor stall with no risk of damage or any problem, it's basically just a cough, a harmless engine surge gasping for air. If a CFM56 powered airplane had this happen, it's time to buy a new engine because its blades would be in a million pieces.

Thanks Ryan! Come to think of it now, the days I saw it happen were all pretty windy. Those old JT8D's sure are tough engines!
