Clear "Tape" On Wings?

Thu Jan 10, 2002 5:17 pm

On all of the Challengers at work I have noticed that on the leading edge of all the winglets there is a clear tape that lines the surface and contours around the light housing. What is the purpose of this "tape"?

You can barely make out the clear "tape" on this RJ.

We use to use it on A320's as well. It's called mylar tape. On the 320's it was used as an anti-erosion device on the Vertical and Stab fin leading edges.

Keep the leading edges from wearing away.

The Army was usuing a lot of it on their helicopters when they where in Saudi.

Also used on leading edges of electric prop boot de-icers and antennas.
