Indianapolis ATC

I want to work in Indianapolis as an ATC when I get older but I was wondering if Indianapolis has a Tracon or is it like Miami where it goes from Tower right to center? I know Indianapolis has a center but I didn't know if it when like tower, to tracon, to center. Thats the way it is in Orlando. Please help. Thanks.

IND is a Class C airspace, so it has approach/departure, tower, ground and clearence.

It's like your standard Class B (in this case Miami), as far as ATC operations go. There are differences, but to an ATC person they're pretty much moot.

So lets say I'm working departures one day in Indianapolis Tower. A Delta 737 gets handed off to me from ground requesting takeoff. I clear him for takeoff from runway 23L and tell him to turn heading 210. He takes off and turns left to 210. At that time do I hand him off to a TRACON departure or do I hand him off to Indianapolis Center.

I may be reading this incorrectly, but I think your getting your definitions confused.
TRACON stands for terminal radar approach control.
ARTCC stands for Air Route Traffic Control Center.

Both Departure and Approach control are apart of TRACON. because they guide imbound aircraft to the initial approach fix, and outbound aircraft to their first enroute fix or to a point to turn them over to ARTCC.

Ahhhh, go for the big money Justin. Work in the center. Besides, we need all the help that we can get in the center. In the tower you'll just be stuck working a ton of midnight shifts because that's the only time that Indy is truly busy and the old guys don't want to work those abyssmal shifts. Wink/being sarcastic

Nevermind, I just checked your profile and it said you did. But I have a question. How much do you make a year? And also, where is the center located? Fishers? If so, where is Fishers? I live in Orlando, FL but want to move up there after college and either live in Indianapolis or a town called Elwood just north of Noblesville.

I understand that you're curious and interested in the field; so I'll just say that the average yearly earnings before taxes among controllers at Indy Center is around $125,000. Indy Center(ZID) is a level 12 facility. There are a total of 13 levels based on the amount of traffic a facility works, however I do not believe that there are currently any facilities that qualify as level 13. I know that the busiest Center(ARTCC) at Cleveland is not a level 13 and neither is the busiest TRACON, Southern California(SCT). The tower and approach facility at Indianapolis International Airport(IND) is a level 9 facility. There is about a six to eight thousand dollar difference in pay between levels, not including locality pay.

The center is currently in a big old facility built in 1962 on the grounds of Indianapolis International Airport. Due to the age of the facility and the events of 9/11 they are currently planning for the construction of a new facility to be opened by 2006, and they have not yet named a location for this new building.

Fishers is a northeastern suburb of Indy and is about 25 miles south of Elwood; by the way, from Elwood you would have about a seventy minute drive to the Center where it sits right now.

ZID, Thanks so much! I appreciate your answer. 125 grand was more than I thought. I was thinking around 100. I didn't know that the indy center was on the grounds of Indy International. I'm looking forward to working there when I get older. After 4 years of high school I plan on going to Embry Riddle in Daytona Beach to get my degree in ATC. Heck, maybe I'll see you in 10 years. Yes, Pilot1113 you would probably be best off talking to one of the professors at Purdue about joining one of their class tours, if they're still allowed to have them. Since 9/11 security is extremely tight and they aren't allowing visitors at Indy Center. Even FAA personnel from other facilities have to be escorted while on the ARTCC's property.
