It's much hard to explain. I listened to ATC at LAX everyday, I know exactly what everyone is talking about. You just have to listen.

Buy a book about ATC where all major phrases are explained! ATC is so simple if you know what they say!
Usually the ATC at big airports consisits only of 5-10 different standard phrases!

Here in germany we have a book called "English for Pilots!" published by the "Motorbuchverlag"
At jfk tower you mostly hear:
- Flightnumber taxi into position and hold
- Flightnumber cleared to land / for takeoff runway ??
- Contact ground/Departure on ???,??
- Continue approach expect landing clearance in short final

You must have a shop dealing with aviation stuff at Hong Kong, ask there!

Half the time, you know approximately what the person on the other end is going to say, or at least have very few alternatives. That makes it a lot easier to pick it up. Here's a good link with an example flight to get you warmed up.

Cheers,
Fred
I thought I was doing good trying to avoid those airport hotels... and look at me now.

The website that Cosync mentioned is also available in print. It's in the US FAR/AIMs, and it is called the Pilot/Controller Glossary. I have heard ATC use some phrases that aren't in the PCG (such as "normal speed"), but most are in there.

Here is some of what they say:

"jetblue 51, wind three six zero at one five, runway three one left, intersection kilo alpha, cleared for takeoff"

"cleared for takeoff three one left through kilo alpha, jetblue 51"

"jetblue 51, contact new york departure. so long!"

"good day. jetblue 51"

"departure, jetblue 51 is one point one climbing 5 thousand"

"jetblue 51, new york departure - radar contact, climb and maintain one three thousand turn left direct wavy"

"direct wavy & up to one three thousand, jetblue 51"

"jetblue 51, contact new york center onetwo eight point three Good Day"

"twenty eight three, so long, jetblue 51"

This flight was headed from JFK to PBI and is an A320.
I also head lots of other traffic, including LH400 (an A340), a Cargolux flight to Mexico, Speedbird 2 (Concorde!!), several american & Delta flights from England & France...both arriving and departing. Live ATC online is so cool!
