Goofy Question, But Try It...

Thu Mar 14, 2002 7:44 am

Does anyone know the name of the PRINT FONT/STYLE Boeing uses on labelling in their cockpits?

It seems military in origin, but unique to aviation related use.

The majority (on buttons etc) is Gill Sans and Gill Sans Condensed (the London Underground font).

Obviously there are subtle changed based on exactly what's being labeled, but that's the basic font.

it is somewhat scary that someone actually knows the name of the font used in aircraft!  Smile

777236ER,

Outstanding!

And yes, a little disturbing.

Would you consider making it your duty in life to go around answering questions in such an indisuptable way, on the first replied post, for every question that comes up on this site?

yeah, as a designer and typographer (yes, I am one of those guys who actually draw these letters...) I in deed can help you. gill sans is a font sold by linotype, check their website at http://www.fontexplorer.com and type "gill" into their search box. it will come up with a couple results, most of them are about $24 each, which is a pretty darn good deal.

the boeing logo font btw is called "stratosphere" and isn't available. it's a custom designed font (meaning they paid BIG bucks so that the designer wouldn't sell it to anyone else). I believe the great erik spiekermann of fontshop.com did it. check their site, they have tons of other great fonts as well.

oh yeah: don't even think about ripped off free fonts, almost 99% of them are lame versions done by people who had no idea about design...
