ATC Coverage In Australia

Thu Mar 14, 2002 8:23 pm

I'm curious, does Australia have complete radar or VHF coverage through the land?

Or is flying over the middle of Oz like flying over the ocean (no radar or VHF comms, so you must give position reports over HF?)

The 'outback' of Australia relies on HF coverage through many areas, with radar far, far away!

That's true. FANS equipped aircraft can datalink anywhere in the Australian FIR, right down into the Great Southern Ocean.

Radar coverage in Australia is only available close to major cities i.e Melbourne/Brisbane/Perth/Sydney/Adelaide/Darwin/Cairns etc. Beyond these areas a/c must rely on procedural methods for traffic seperation i.e waypoint reporting. Most of WA/NT/QLD/SA is outside radar coverage and outside VHF coverage so they use HF.

Have a look at this link, it has a diagram of radar coverage in Australia.

http://www.airservices.gov.au/mediainfo/informationfeatures/australianairspace/radarcoverage.htm

VHF coverage is normally always available in controlled airspace, with the exception of some controlled airspace above FL200 over central Australia and over water.

VHF is always available for air to air, below VHF coverage HF is used. HF may need to be used very close to major centers as terrain may mask VHF coverage.

The following PDF document (717k) does provide more details on the Australian aispace, radar, radio coverage etc. http://www.airservices.gov.au/pilotcentre/projects/LAMP/ConceptofOps.pdf
