Anti-collision Lights Offset?

Sat Mar 30, 2002 2:59 am

On a recent MD-80 night flight, I noticed the right wing was almost fully illuminated by the flashing red anti-collision light on top of the plane, while only the wing tip was illuminated on the left. Are the anti-collision lights on the MD-80 offset from the center of the fuselage? If so, why? Are all planes like this and I've just never noticed?

Never noticed it before, but it's sure not on the centerline, is it...

You're right, it's way off center! Does anyone know why that is?

It is offset to the right so it can be accessed from inside the cabin.
It may also be offset, like antennas on the aft part of the fuselage,so as not to disturb the airflow into the ram-air intake on the fin leading edge.I'm not sure on this one, though.

What is that ram air intake on the fin's base for? Is it the APU intake?

That is NOT the APU intake, it is the heat exchanger air inlet. The APU inlet is on the bottom of the fuselage beneath the engines.

Look carefully at the picture above. You will see also that the antenna is slight offset to the right of the fuselage.

Strange...

Is it possible there is an airframe rib that runs the center of the a/c?
