Reverse Thrust And N1 Speed

Mon Apr 15, 2002 12:45 am

I have a question in regards to N1 speed and reverse thrust. During reverse thrust does the N1 speed actually increase? Or does it just move at idle and the thrust is simply redirected forwards? I just recieved an Air Tahiti A-340 DVD and during full reverse thrust, the thrust reversers are actuated, and then I saw the N1 speed increase to what seemed to be a much higher N1 than idle.
Thanx in advance,

Yes, first you must bring the throttle lever to idle before pulling back on the reverser activators. On reverse thrust, the engine will work the same, but with the bypass air re-directed foreward. I think there is a maximum reverse thrust that is much lower than normal max thrust, but I'm not sure in what percent. The N1 should show this difference.

On the 757-200 with Rolls Royce RB211-535E4 engines the maximum RPM for takeoff is 108.0% N1, but for Reverse Thrust is 84.3% N1.

Otherwise as VC10 said, you answered your own question!

Typically in the CFM56 powered Airbuses, reverse thrust maxes out at about 70N1.
