FedEx Approaches Into MEM

Mon May 20, 2002 7:59 am

From NTSB Accident report ID 20011129X02310:

The flightcrew reported that while on final approach for runway 9 at Memphis, at between 1,700 and 2,000 feet agl., at 250 knots, they encountered a flock of large birds. A bird penetrated the airplane under the captains windshield and bird remains entered the cockpit. They continued to Memphis and landed without further incident.

Radar data from the FAA, Memphis Air Route Traffic Control Center, showed the flight was at about position 35 degrees, 3 minutes, 34 seconds North latitude, and 90 degrees, 4 minutes, 59 seconds West longitude, or about 6 nautical miles west of Memphis International Airport, at the time of the encounter.

Does FedEx really fly the lawn darts at 250 KIAS 6 miles out on final into MEM? How do the 727s slow down to land? Is this common?

I don't know if it's common. But it certainly isnt anything out of the oardinary.

If you want to slow down in the 727 real quick just pop out the boards, and bring power to idle. Retract the boards at max flap extension speed and get out flaps 2, and your down to about 180KIAS in about 10 seconds.

For a visual appraoch this normal operation.

This isn't anything specific to FedEx operations, but more of a controller issue.

Doesn't sound particularly unusual to me, visual so just have to be configured, on speed, G/S and powered up by 500'. Probably most slow down slightly earlier, but a 727 will slow pretty easily.

As far as I know they are very common landings. I remember reading about their approaches into MEM and reading something about the fact that the cargo passengers in the back don't complain about the decent and landings.
Its better to be on the ground wishing you were in the air than be in the air wishing you were on the ground. Fly safe!

I don't think it's unusual. Those things slow down very fast. I remember a Cargo 727 flying into YQB will I was doing touch n go's. He came extremely fast and did a drunk-assed curved visual approach for Runway 24 at touched down like half-way down the 9000 feet runway. There are no passengers in those flights so they don't have to worry about passenger confort.

Drunk-ass curved? as in doing S-turns? or as in just a lazy turn?
