C Check D Check What Are They (novice)

Am what are all these checks, I know that they are to check the aircraft, like a service but with a higher intensity as they look at very minute detail or so I belive. Can anyone clarify the differences between C and D etc.

Hi BWIA 772, Buzz here. At UAL, C checks are more-or-less a yearly inspection that takes a couple days to work through.
The D check is a heavy overhaul that can take weeks. We used to break down the D check into 1/4 of it's original size inspection,and cycle the airplanes through 4 times more frequently. If you let the D check interval run to the very end, we've found some severe corrosion on customer's airplanes. Then the airplane is parked for 5 or 6 weeks while belly / floor beam repairs are made.
Pardon me, it's been 15 years since i worked overhaul. I much prefer the life of a line mechanic working midnight shift, troubleshooting anything that comes along.

Hi Buzz thanks for the info. I was wondering is it cheaper for an airline to do its own maintenance or contract it out to a thrid part. How about a relatively small airline that has a fleet of 6 737. If you dry lease and aircraft for 5 years a medium term lease i presume as some got 10 years etc, does it make sense to train ur staff which would cost millions to fix new type of aircraft or contract such maintenance to another airline and finally when a country is down graded to a category 2 does this mean that the maintenance of planes acquired by an airline based in the country cannot be done at the airlines base.
