Please Help Me With My Plans!

Fri Jun 14, 2002 12:50 pm

Hi, I am about to be a Senior in H.S (Fall 2002) and I am hoping to become a commercial avition pilot (airline pilot), but I am not exactly sure how to go about this. I am planning to attend a university, but I need some help with choosing the right one and what courses to take. I live in the Los Angeles arean and don't mind relocating, I just need to make sure that I am going on a good path. All help is appreciated!

I recommend to find out what you expect to get out of your training, what you need and what you want. That alone should narrow your choices down. By this I mean, do you want a B.S., Masters or PH'D. Do you want to major in aviation or some other subject. Are you planning on using the military for flight training or civilian all the way. Do you want to be a CFI (certified flight instructor) or do you just want to lay down the money for all the hrs needed for the job.

My advice is start searching the aviation magazine and get a feel for all the choices out their and what they have to offer.

Ziggy, good luck  Big thumbs up

I go to Embry Riddle.

Good school, overall, still has plenty of room for improvement. But, I've been generally pleasead with it so far. I'd reccomend you check it out. I go to the one in DAB. It is, IMO, better then Prescott, we're bigger, more courses on offer, etc. I must warn you though, if you are looking to meet your wife in college, don't come to Riddle, girls are few and far between. Last time I check, the number was at 86% male.  Yeah sure

Defently dont expect to marry a riddle chick... or a daytona girl for that matter... unless you like high school girls and then you can get a mainland girl, your pretty much celebate for 4-5 years if you go to embry riddle, one thing on prescotts defense from what i have heard the local girls there are great, really homely and honest, not like the daytona trash girls.....

I go to the Prescott campus... As far as girls go, it sucks. However the flight training is awesome and challenging. If you wana' do business come out here.
(not putting down DAB in any way, Riddle is Riddle)

I see we have more than one thing in common with the Prescott campus other than the name.

First things first, it doesn't matter that much what degree you have just as long as you have a degree.

Now with that said, how intrested are you into aviation, do you get grumpy when you go a week without flying? Then Riddle might be for you.

If not goto a state school and do your training at an FBO. You will end up in the same place.

No matter what you choose good luck.

Wilcharl,

But yeah, who would touch a mainland girl? I wouldn't, not even with a 10 foot pole. I've heard their STD and pregnancy rate is one of the highest in the country.

Wilcharl,

Weren't you here on the fixed plan, if you were why didn't you fly out to Orlando, at MCO one of the girls on Signature Flight service lets us use the airport car.

Its great we normally only go when its actual, when we get there we hang out at the clubs (not drinking mind you) and head back home after a few hours.

Then again I have a little more access to cheap/free airplanes than most.

Well there is always Stentson, its only about 10 miles away.

My opinion? Don't go to Riddle. It's too much money for what you get. If you want to get a degree in aviation, go find a good state school. Just as PPGMD said, you'll eventually wind up in the same place, and your wallet will be considerably heavier.

P.S. I get a little edgy when I go a week without flying, and I go to a state school.

nah, i did my flight off campus, I started out in Aerospace Engineering, switched majors, started flying off campus before it was banned, realized afterwards i woulda been better on fixed price, but by then they had done away with fixed price... If I wanted to land an airline job and i could start from scratch i would go to a respected flight acadamy like FlightSafety and then get my degree through embry riddles extended campus... kinda depressing when i graduated and the extended campus guys graduated with us, got the same diploma and didnt have to stay in DAB

Considerably heavier hah? Either way you are going to be broke when you come out of college, its just a matter or how broke.

Speed: Like I said Riddle "might" be for you.

Wilcharl: Same hole I was in, I came to be an engineer, found out how boring that was and all my friends were pilots. One thing lead to another.

The best thing i can say for riddle is it got me a job when i graduated even with the way industry is... im flying a desk but im happy... the riddle name carries alot of weight, and there are alumni everywhere for you to help you out. probley carries alot more weight then its worth but it defently is the most respected name bar none...

so the pros are

the name the education quality the alumni

the cons

GIRLS (orlando is just a hop away and there alota hot latinos girls there) or there is bethune cooman if you like the ebony varrity or stetson but i think they are tired of riddle rats...

I guess I better not tell you how much, rather, how little I pay in tuition per semester. Let's just say that I have money left over from my pell grant, and that I'm a senior and I'm taking out my first loan this year. I go to a state school, and I pay resident tuition. Riddle ain't the only show in town.

Speed: Like I said Riddle "might" be for you.

Or it might not. As I recall, I didn't ask the question about it, but thanks anyway.

True. I will be broke. In fact, I'll be in debt. But only about $2K. Sure beats $20K!

I appreciate all this guys, do you think that you can tell me which is better though? ERAU or Purdue? I am really not sure so I turned to you guys here, I am hoping to be close to a South American population, exactly how far is ERAU from MIA? Is anyone willing to actually go online and talk to me? My AIM is clos340. I would greatly appreciate it!

Riddle is about 4 hours from MIA (well 2 if you fly).

Speed, you are extremely lucky you got a Pell grant, its worth alot of money. But for me, my parents are pretty well off (no where near rich), Riddle offered me a grant along with the State of Florida Private school grant, its made it cheaper for me to go to a Private school than a public.

When I leave Riddle I will have about $14K in debt, not that bad thats about what my step-father had when he came out of a state school several years ago.

LanPeru are you a resident of PA, if not they both will cost about the same.

Also I know someone that is at Purdue (err though Riddle I seem to know someone from just about everywhere) and he is pretty happy with it. There is one oppurtunity at Purdue that is quite good the very best seniors in the flight program get to fly one of the schools head guys around in a get, thus building turbine time. Also the girls are better there too.

But that is a pretty slim, but if you want excellent contacts in the industry, that WILL help you get a job faster, than come to Riddle, that about the only other reason except for the aviation atmosphere that I would recommend coming to Riddle.

But in the end, its all what you make of your college expierence, once you have the hours and after your first couple of jobs it won't matter what college you went to, its just another name on your application.

Though it is funny meeting Riddle alumani, no matter how bad Riddle was to them, it was one of their best expierence of thier lives.

Riddle just has a way to draw the people back. If without a doubt you can afford it come here and have fun.

If you wnat close to a south american population ERAU is the place... the university is very diverse with a large latin american community.... orlando is just an hours drive waway with alot of (BEAUTIFUL) puerto rican woman, i graduated with people from equador peru, brazil to name a few... i dont know if you can say the same thing for diversity at peru..

another thing in ERAU's defense is

IM NOT THAT SMART

I barley made it out of high school and left riddle with a 2.2 gpa... .so its certainly not my intelligence that got me where I was I beleive the name and knoweldge gained got me here...

Is it competitive at all to get into Riddle or is just whoever has the money and whoever loves flying the most goes? I am only in 9th grade but I'm gonna be a pilot somehow (don't know yet so more ideas would be great). Also do they offer scholarships you can compete for?

OK I am doing things differently. I am going to a Standard University. I'm getting a degree in Meteorology (something I enjoy and relevant to flying), and I am saving HUGE bucks by doing this instead of going to a specialized Aviation school. Now I am not saying anything bad about such fine schools as Embry Riddle, but for some that feel it is unnecessary as I do, then there is plenty of other highly logical options for getting to where you need to be. I have friends who go to ERAU in PRC, one even from Hong Kong. All I hear is complaints. Sure this may not be the case for every body but from multiple people it makes me question if its worth the extra expense. The biggest factor which made me finalize on doing a standard University education and flying at the local airport is this...

Since I fly often on United Airlines as a Non rev passenger, I always love to stop by the flight deck and talk with the pilots. Recently I have spoke with many 747-400,767-300, A320, 737 pilots and some even flying the little Hawkers (my current instructor) or Gulfstreams for corporations. Not one of them had gone to a special Aeronautical school. Not one of them specialized in aeronautics, and not one of them strongly supported an aeronautical university. Several of my family friends (747-400 Captain, 777 captain, 767 Captain all for UA) encouraged a move in the direction of standard University and flight training at local flight schools. What I got from this overwhelming response for a standard Uni education was not that aeronautical universities do no good for students, just that there is infact jobs for those who don't go to the specialized college. Before I chose my path for education and flight training I was under the impression that I had to get an aeronautics degree, that I had to go to a top of the line school like Embry Riddle if I wanted to get hired for a flying career. Bottom line, don't feel you need to do an Aeronautics course at a specialized school if you rather study something else. After all my research I have found that in the end, it is apparent the paths of these two educational backgrounds meet up in the flight deck, where all of us hopefuls deserve to be after all the effort and money!

Best of luck to us all!

As far as GPA Riddle is not that competive (I believe that they accept 78% of applicants), the biggest thing that I hear is that they want people with high SAT scores. Becuase in the end that single Ride at the end of the semester makes all the diffrence, they want people that are apt at trying hard and aceing it. Otherwise they might lose thier 141 if too many people flunk it.

How much does ERAU cost you all ?
Is anybody here informed about the costs for international students?
Thanks in advance,
