B737-800 Hiss?

Wed Jul 03, 2002 12:29 am

Hi,
So I am sat in row 30 on a Pegasus Airlines 738 the other week, flying back from sunny Turkey to rainy Luton. Boo Hoo.
Anyway, on climb out, there is a very audible hissing sound, that increases in sound as we are going up - almost like an air escape that gets greater as we gain altitude. I thought it might be aerodynamic - but it disappeared by the time we were at cruise. Then I thought it may have been the cabin pressurising, and the noise was the outflow - or even the door seals expanding and sealing the escaping air.
Any ideas anyone?

Sounds to me like the plane had a leaky door seal.

On a somewhat related topic, the older guys I work with miss one thing about the old days. Back when people could still smoke on airplanes it has easy to find leaks in door seals. That's because there was nicotine stains on the fuselage where the air was leaking. Just a bit of trivia.

Wow - glad my wife didn't find out - she hates flying at the best of times - leaking seals would be of no great comfort!
So, would that be a common problem on a 2 year old plane? When does it become serious - when pressure cannot be maintained I guess?

I wouldn't worry about it to much. Yes, I guess you could say that it would become a problem when pressure cannot be maintained. However it would take a lot of leaky door seals for this to happen.

And no it's not common for any plane to have leaky door seals.

When I flew on a CO 737-800 I also experienced a "hissing" sound on climbout. That's very strange indeed.

You hear that hissing on Qantas 738s all the time.
