Maybe A Dumb Question...

But why do you have an outside light at the exit of the APU? Is it for nightly pre-flight checks or what?

I assumed what you are reffering to is position light. (White light on the tip of tailcone just near the apu exhaust?).
If it's an Airbus, I'll take the bus

You probably are referring to the Strobe light.

Try specifying better which light you are referring to. Maybe try a photo on the site.
Are you referring to a 747's APU exhaust?

If this is the one, it is not for pre-flight cecks. It's for other aircraft telling where's your aircraft's rear end precisely. On dark airports or fogged at night, it can help a lot in telling how much space the surrounding aircraft are filling.

Saintsman...

I can just faintily hear a "beep...beep...beep...beep..." as it is backing away from the gate.  Smile

Cricri: If it's a 727, it could be an evacuation light. Regards,
