Are Hovercraft Engines Used On Any Plane

Mon Aug 05, 2002 9:38 pm

Ive just watched "Big Stuff" on Channel 5 (UK) and the worlds largest hovercraft was on it, operating from the UK to France and back. It has 4 Props on it, each powerd by a Rolls Royce engine. Now the Narrator didnt say weather or not they were Gas turbine, Deisel or petrol engines. If they were Gas turbine (I.E. Massive turbo props) are the engines used on any aircraft?

I did not see the programme but the marine version of the RR Proteus gas turbine was used on the SRN4 hovercrafts. The aviation version of the engine was used on the Bristol Britannia aircraft.

Other versions of the engine where used for emergency electric power backup systems (appartently one was on top of the Natwest tower in London, I don't know if its still there).

The question should be: Are aircraft engines used on Hovercraft? The answer is yes.

Don't quote me on this, but I think the hovercraft in question is powered by 4 Rolls Royce Darts. If that is true, there are many aircraft powered by the Dart. HS-748, F-27, and YS-11 to name a few.

Break ground, and head into the wind. Don't break wind and head into the ground.

The Proteus was used on the Bristol Britannia.
