Questions For Atpl Pilots

I am currently considering to start ATPL training in November, despite 9/11 and the current downturn in the economy.

If you have some experience, what would you say is the situation right now:
  • Which airlines are actively hiring new pilots (minimum experience), both in Europe and elsewhere?

  • What age is currently considered critical?

  • What you say that there is really a trend to smaller regional airliners=more planes overall?

  • Sorry if this question was discussed already previously and thanks for helping me a little bit with this decision!

    Setjet - difficult question to answer...
    All airlines in the world hire a little - or a lot of pilot trainees... In Europe of course you must be a EU citizen to be considered, obviously... The USA have the record of having prevented Europeans to work with USA airlines, now is their turn to prevent Americans from getting positions in Europe...
    I would recommend to seek USA employment for you since you are from there. I am an ex-American, and ex-PanAm pilot and I had to take Argentina citizenship to get a job in Argentina, had to take all the tests for their ATPL, and pass a test of Spanish language proficiency, despite the fact I was a 747 captain, pilot instructor, and with 17,000 hours or so...
    Lots of advantages being pilot outside USA, salaries are great, benefits are incredible (insurances, health, retirement)... and while in the USA you have to retire at age 60, overseas is generally 65...
    If I had known of employment conditions overseas back 30 years ago, I would never have joined a USA air carrier... overseas, pilots are respected and high salaries permit outstanding living conditions in the country you would be in. Look also for positions in Asia or South America...
    Did you know that the "concept" of furlough is unheard of, in South America? With PanAm I got unemployed twice... in South America, you keep your full salary , just work less hours...

    Thanks B747skipper for the long answer.
    It was pretty interesting to read what a pilot career can be like. I have no doubt that the long term perspective looks bright for aviation, although we currently see some hickups during the restructuring of the industry (US Airways is the best example).

    I really wonder if more pilots could give their perspectives of things to come and things they experienced in the last big crisis after the Gulf War.

    Try getting B737 NG certifications and join Jet Airways (9W) in India , you will see what B747skipper means about joining airlines in Asia or South America . Pilots a priveleged lot out here . I know this for a fact because my dad is one. the salaries pilots draw here are phenomenal, you would have to be a damn CEO of a company to draw that kind of a package. It is like US salaries in India , only thing being a US dollar is about 50 indian rupees  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

    Dear Setjet -
    Eastern Airlines was once the largest US airline... they are gone... PanAm was the "unofficial flag carrier" of the US, and the chosen instrument of the US government, they are gone... during a furlough, from PanAm in the 1970s, I received an offer to join a stupid little domestic air carrier called SouthWest Airlines - who? - me...? ... an international airline pilot flying miserable "light twins" like 737s?... in Redneck's land...? No thanks... PanAm served lobster to the pilots, SouthWest served peanuts... layovers in Mobile, AL in a Motel 6, or in Bombay, India at the Taj Mahal hotel did not compare... That was my answer...
    I learned from my mistakes Setjet... when you are a pilot nearly 30 of age, or nearly 60 of age, things are quite different...
    Be an airline pilot, Setjet, and travel overseas, make friends in all countries, do not classify them by race, religion, or color of skin... there are wonderful people in all countries of the world... learn to say hello and thank you in some 30 languages, and have a smile, which is an international language in itself... I logged 131 countries in my career... so far... and still counting...
