"Pele" Hits A Plane With A Goal Kick!

Fri Aug 30, 2002 10:35 am

Ok, so Phil and I are spotting at LGA where the planes on Runway 4 Approach are maybe 100 feet above us, if that!

These kids were playing soccer near the stanchions. I was wondering,

what if one of these kids took a goal kick and struck the a/c?!???!!! Sounds bizarre but stranger things have happened.

I doubt the impact on the plane would exert more force than that of a strong wind. Am I wrong?

Phil agrees that if that ball found the duct of the engine, the plane would go down. True but then again, it was going down regardless and would land in 7 seconds.

But, would those lil' kids be sent to jail?? Would the pilots freak and go around? (I dont mean that in a bad way, but really, if you are a pilot in the final 60 feet of approach, what would you do if an unidentified object slammed into your windshield?)

Depends on the size of the aircraft. If you are talking single engine prop driven aircraft, you might have a problem if the ball hits the prop. If you are talking airliners, even if the ball goes into the engine you still have the other one. In any case I don't think it would have too much effect if it hits anywhere else on either plane (besides the obvious dents that would need repairs).

If the ball goes into the engine on an airliner.. you may get nothing.. or possibly a compressor stall.. thats really it. If it hit the windshield.. probably nothing more than both pilots looking over at each other, shrugging their shoulders and continueing hte approach.

Now the chances of it hitting an airliner.. there isnt any way there is an approved glideslope that takes airplanes 100 feet over a soccer field.. youd be surprised how low an airliner looks when it is still 500 feet or more.

You biggest problem is if one of the kids is not just playing football but is also carrying a gun and combine that with some drug and/or alcohol taking, anything can happen. A lot of airports are surrounded by low property value areas thus attracting what can be called the inner city element. for big aircraft a bullet not much of a problem and relatively high off the deck (I believe) but for small aircraft it can cause problems. I know people who have been shot at and round here I don't fly my little toy low over certain areas on weekend afternoons particularily after payday, as the alcohol has been broken out and anything can happen. Recently one irate airport neighbour fired a flare at a low flying craft, nosie got too much..... But beware low flying in the countryside, many a farmer has taken a pot shot at an aircraft/helicopter, most of the time just for fun, it appears. If the bullet causes harm its more by pure luck (or unludck if you flying) that it actually hits.

During the high times of kurd terrorism in south eastern Turkey, terrorists actaually fired to Turkish Airlines A310 during take off ,around it was climbing 200-300 feet with AK-47 assault rifle. The aircraft took more than 20 bullets under its belly. The interesting thing is nobody(both pilots and passengers)noticed anything, its only seen during the copilots walk around inspection before second leg.
