FCC Radiotelephone Permit

Tue Dec 03, 2002 3:18 pm

Searched for how to get the permit on the FCC site... was quite confusing.

Anybody have any pointers on how to go about getting my permit?

Pretty sure you only have to fill out the form and give some money to the man.

Yea, I remember it being a pain in the ass, but the link I posted above and this link should get you started. The good news is that you can do everything online.

You don't need one if you are operating in the US.

Thanks alot for the quick response, fellas!

Jetguy- the airlines in the US require that you have one. I'll finally start applying for them in the spring.  Smile

Say I have an air radio transceiver... If I need to communicate with family or friends who fly, on the CTAF freq for our local grass strip, would I need a license?

I believe you would. I don't think it's legal to "chat w/ friends & family" on CTAF.

Well, I didn't mean it the way it sounds. Of course you can't 'chat', as in a casual telephone conversation, which is how you seem to have taken it. Everybody who would tx and rx are pilots, what I meant is, is any contact (tx) over VHF air freq not from an aircraft legal...And in no way do I, or did I expect it to be, I just figured it couldn't hurt to ask.

Honestly, I don't know, but it's a good question. But I doubt it.

Nya, Nya...I still have mine from 1959. It cost nothing, was worth nothing and had a little perforated temporary doodad that you tore off so that you could use a radio while you waited for the real "ticket." I believe that the doodad said "bearer," or something. It is a nice, secure feeling to know that I am legal anywhere.

I shudder to think that safety is being compromised by unlicensed yakking.

If you haven't got it already then what I did is just fill out the info sheet stated the purpose for the permit and sent 50.00 with it. But yes, it took me a good hour just to sort out all the junk pages and find the info to properly fill it out. Just keep at it
