Time Spent Away From Home

Sat Feb 22, 2003 2:34 pm

For all you airline types out there I was wondering if you all could give me a realistic estimate--at the different stages of my career--that I can expect to spend away from home. I am in college right now at MTSU for a Pro Pilot degree and am having kind of a hard time dealing with only being home 6-8 days out of the month and being away at school the rest. So I am beginning to rethink my career choice here and was wondering if you guys have any insight.. thanks so much!

Over a 35+ year professional career, have been away from home about two thirds of the time, perhaps slightly more, from time to time.
Goes with the territory.

Although we fly totally different type of operation from the US airline operators to give an example I spend 8 months out of my home last year.At the moment I am again away from my house for the last 13 days to fly as a wet lease operation for foreign operator and I 'll be away until 17 of March. Then I'll be back again in 3 months and during these 3 months I will be spending at least 2 months with my luggage in my hand.

When I read testimonies like that I realise I am not so unfortunate after all! Generally I spend no more than 3-4 nights a month away from home (apart from the odd occasion when we do a night flight of course, but they are more common in Summer).

90% of our operations are "there-and-back" routes to Spain / Greece / Med destinations, which is great on the personal life (home every night).

Being based at LGW means the odd longhaul flight to Florida / Caribbean which can involve stops away for 3 to 7 nights depending on the destination. Never really complain at those trips though!! Big grin

I fly for a long range charter airline. And I spend about 12 days per month. And almost never more than 3 days consecutive. I think that in Europe we are more lucky than in the US.

I fly a medium haul fleet and I am away for about 10-12 nights a month including a couple of night flights. I can be away from home for 6 nights at a time on some Middle Eastern patterns.

I fly with airlines since 1969 - was PanAm until 1991 bankruptcy, then one year with Cargolux, since then in Argentina...

Through my career, I averaged about 2/3 time "on the road" (away from home) - this ratio remained constant, i.e. if gone 10 days, I would come back home for 5 days, if gone for 20 days, back for 10 days...
xxx
On long time assignments at distant bases, such as overseas ACMI assignments, the worst was away for 2 months, then home 1 month... thus the 2/3 and 1/3 proportion is an accurate description of time ON and OFF...
xxx
If you fly for "domestic" USA or "short haul" flights, you may still expect the same proportion... my company operates 737s and MD80s on short haul flights on the same ratio, however their time ON and OFF would be 2 days of work, followed by a day OFF...
xxx
Honestly, given choice of long haul or short flights (pay is the same for us) I prefer long periods of time OFF, this gives me the time to "enjoy" the time off much more than pilots who fly short haul flights...
