Atis By Phone!

Wed Feb 26, 2003 11:36 pm

I was very surprised to see that the Stansted ATIS is now available on the phone.

Its exactly as you would hear on the radio, you just dial the number and it plays - magic!

Does anyone know if other airports that have this facility? Is there a place where all of these numbers are listed/published? Im most interested in the London area airports, and possibly others in the UK/England.

Thanks for any information.. very very handy to have!

As part of NavCanada's flight planning you can access both the METAR and TAF's over the phone as well. A nice feature.

Most airports (in the US anyway) have a phone number for ATIS and ASOS/AWOS.

If you call the FBO out here at my local airport, and they put you on hold, you're listening to ATIS!

I know everyone here knows this, but just to clarify, the ATIS recording is different from the ASOS recording. When you listen to it on a scanner, it is the ATIS recording (unless you are at a small airport where the tower closes, where they will play ASOS when they are closed). When you call the phone number, it is the ASOS.

TAFs and METARs over the phone too? Very good.

Actually that is what Im more interested in. The reason why I woud like to access them on the phone is so I can get an idea of what the flying weather will be, before I get out of bed (or see if I should even bother getting up). We have a good online Met service but seem to be missing out with the phone services...

Wouldn't be alot easier to just go to a computer and read it and print it out from there. I hate phone recordings, they sometimes are hard to understand.

Your right Fsuwxman, NavCanada not only supplies the weather information via phone, but also you can access all the information on their website as well. Plus the website contains NOTAM's, Airmets and Sigmets, PIREPS, as well as the Canadian GFA's (Graphical Forecast Area) as well as upper winds, volcanic ash warnings...radar images, precip rates, Atlantic Turbulence charts.... pretty much anything you need is on the website!

It is nice to be able to wake up in the morning, phone in for the latest METAR and TAF at YYC and then if it is 50/50 sounding, go upstairs and consult all the info on the website.

I've been listeing to LGA's Phone ATISfor about a year. It's important when spotting. Did they change the runways? Jsut call up from your cell phone and find out!

LGA: 718-478-6067

JFK: 718-995-8188

To find an airport's ATIS phone number, just copy the following link...

...and type in its three letter abbreviation at the end, like:

http://www.fboweb.com/20/airports/airport_detail.asp?airportident=JFK

You will see it listed there, along with a lot of other great airport info.

I think the number you gave for LGA is someone's private number.

Skyguy11,

Well for a pilot an A/FD is the only official source of information. And heck they are so cheap might as well pick it up for spotters, how many books contain that much information about an airport.
