EMB 145/135

Fri Mar 07, 2003 9:24 pm

I noticed that on the EMB 145/135 there are 3-4 small yellow fins on the underside of the outboard portion of the wing. Exactly what aerodynamic purpose do they serve?

The fins are "vortex generators".
That part of the ERJ's wing tends to "Burble" (It's like a pre-stall) when the wing is at high AoA. The Burble can cause buffeting and loss of effectiveness of the ailerons.

The fins are also there for OJI purposes for ground workers. Big grin

Actually the yellow protusions are "vortilons", they are the leading edge of the wings. The vortex generators on the Embraers are on the upper surface of the wing, forward of the ailerons. They are painted the same color as the wing upper surface.
