Delta's "tanked" MD11s

Wed Mar 19, 2003 5:54 am

Where is/are the extra fuel tank(s) located on DL's tanked MD11s? Assuming they're somewhere in the cargo bay, the airline has to take a payload penalty (volume-wise) because of it right?

I'm not sure about the MD11, but most planes I'm familiar with that have "extra" tanks have them in the wings.
Last year 1,944 New Yorkers saw something and said something.

The 777NGs have them in both the wingtips and the forward aft cargo bay*

Delta installed tanks in the underfloor cargo compartments to bump up the range to what had been promised by MD when the initial orders were placed. This traded cargo volume for fuel, but allowed the planes to fly the routes they had been bought for.

MD eventually developed a multi-step performance improvement package to give the MD-11 the promised design range without cargo tanks. Anyone know if Delta got the PIP and/or removed its tanks?

Best I know... no MD-11 ever reached its design range, which was 8260 nm.

I'm not sure if DL got the PIP, but I'd bet they did.

This is why we only ever saw N804DE and N806DE in Hong Kong apart from when one of them was in maintenance.

There's the MD11ER variant, equipped with cargo hold extra tanks. I guess they are located on the aft hold and most probably have the shape of LD3 containers...

AeroCancun used to have an A310 equipped with extra tanks as well, they were located on the aft hold.

Garuda and World Airways had(former) and have(later) this MD11 sub-type.

According the latest JP, all the Delta MD11's have the same mtow and from what I remember from dispatching them out from GRU, none has extra tanks, but might have gotten them after that... BTW, hasn't DL dropped HKG a few years ago?

Delta dropped HKG a few years ago, so I guess they didn't need the extra tanks on those two MD11s for the rest of the network.

Actually CxFB, 6 of DL's fifteen MD11s were tanked at one point.

They still have horrible reliability reaching NRT nonstop during the winter... DL55 often stops in PDX/ANC/CTS and sometimes even includes a scheduled stop in PDX when either winds are forecasted too heavily or ATL's primary runway is having heavy construction/maintenance (which seems to happen quite a bit lately)  Sad

Hawaiian Air's 717s had the xtra tanks in the aft cabin area for the ferry flight from LGB to HNL.

Heh the Hawaiian ones are very different than what we're talking about.

The Hawaiian ones are a temporary system that replaces the interior of the aircraft with fuel tanks... not intended for scheduled use... and they're left over from the DC-9 days.

In fact, a DC-9 took 9 of the tanks to get from LGB to HNL. The 717 only required 4. Talk about fuel efficiency.

The MD-11, 772LR, and so on ones are cargo container shaped, and designed for day in day out usage.

Regards DL55: Its just sad that the flight has to stop as frequently as it does... its a distance of less than 6000nm. A damn A332 should be able to traverse this route without too much trouble. I'm sure this flight will work much better for DL after it goes 777.

There were 6 MD11s? I guess the two to always fly to HKG must have been based somewhere different to 804 and 806, which used to fly HKG-LAX, I think.

You are correct in that they were the original two to be tanked, the other were installed aftermarket, and I believe a few may have been delivered with the tanks already installed. B747-437B would know, ask him.
