Concorde Flying Time From JFK To LHR

Thu Mar 27, 2003 1:17 am

I was just browsing BA timetables and noticed that the total time for BA002 is now 4 hours. I remember it being around 3hrs 45 mins. I know this is nitpicking but is there any reason for the increase in total time? Is it due to new routing or taxying delays?

I read on a website that it was 3hrs and 21 mins. I wonder if BA are just giving an approximate time when they say '4 hours'?

Tu144d

For the summer schedules, the departure time of the BA 2 has been brought forward, and it will depart JFK at 09:00 EDT.

Obviously the arrival time at LHR has also come forward, and the aircraft will arrive at a busier time at LHR, with an increased chance of ATC delays.

The five minute increase in the flight schedule, to 4h:00m, reflects this, and the new arrival time LHR is 18:00 BST.

The typical flying time of around 3h:15m, before any ATC delays, may well decrease a couple of minutes, as the Summer Deceleration Point is much closer to the UK coast than the Winter Deceleration Point, so Concorde can stay at Mach 2.0 a bit longer.

Thanks for your reply "Bellerophon". BTW, Why does the decerlation point change from Summer to Winter?

Tu144d

In the colder temperatures of winter, the secondary, or reflected booms, from Concorde occasionally seem to bounce further from the aircraft than we would expect, or sonic theory dictate.

As a result of complaints from those affected, mainly people living in the South West of England, we moved the point by which Concorde had to be below Mach 1.0 further out into the Atlantic, which has cured the problem.

This phenomenon of secondary boom reflection doesn't happen in Summer temperatures, so we revert to the normal deceleration point.

On a late shift about 4 years ago, BA switchboard screwed up and some irate woman in SW England was put through to our hangar, I took the call.
She claimed that Concorde had gone supersonic over her house, I assured her that would not happen, could it have been a RAF aircraft?
But her timings matched the BA004, she sounded the type who would make I fuss and take it further, so I could not say what I wanted to say, when she moaned about the noise, that is, "yeah, great isn't it!"

when I flew on Concorde (ID90), our planned flying time was 3 hours and 14 minutes. Of course, when we got to LHR, we had to wait for our gate to open up.

Regardless, Concorde is the MOST AWESOME aircraft in the sky, bar none. Great Britain and France can be proud of the fact that they cooperated to produce this incredible machine.

The record for a Concorde flight on the westbound route (LHR-JFK) is 2 hours 59 mins. How unbelievable is that? In Canadian airspace after about 1:50.

I am going to buy a ticket before October. Definitely.

On that note, Cedarjet, did anyone see the billboard that BA had up in New York (maybe on time square?) a few years ago .. it was just a picture of a Concorde touchdown from behind, complete with all the exhaust haze, and the only text was "Concorde world record Atlantic crossing 2:58:59" or something like that.

I thought it was awesome  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

With the recent Concorde news, what chance does a 13-year-old stand of getting on Concorde before she goes...none  Sad
