Emirates has (I understand) the largest number of nationalities in their pilots of any airline in the world. Lots of Australians and Brits (the Chief Pilot is British). Lots of other nationalities as well (South African, Bangaldeshi, etc..!)
They are a very popular company to work for due to the 100% tax free salary. Here in the UK a £40,000 salary means take home pay of £28,800 after tax
the £40,000 (US$56,000) First Officer start salary is all
take home pay. I would have to earn £60,000 in the UK to take that amount home with me, equivalent to about a Year 9 First Officer (almost 6 years from now for me).
Dubai is also a very cosmopolitan city and the company provide rapid career progression on an A330 or bigger, offer you an interest-free car loan, fully furnished accommodation, etc...
With year-round sunshine and several daily flights to the UK if you need to see the family (or vice-versa) it's not difficult to see why so many people want to work for them.
I used to love the smell of Jet-A in the morning...
