Simple answer... some are and some aren't! It depends whether they have passed a Cross Crew Qualification Course (CCQ). Same as A320 series pilots flying the A330 (as many in the UK do), it is subject to the CCQ course being passed.

A CCQ is required because the aircraft have different type ratings. So where the 757/767 (which shares a type rating) just needs a brief differences course, to go A330 to A340, or the other way, needs a CCQ of just over a week I recall. Still far far less than transitioning from say a 737 to a 747 or a 757/767 to 777 which is a full type rating course (approx. 1 month).

Hope this answered your question!

yup, you did! and that was a quick response too...thanks Rick767. Do you know if pilots qualify on both the 330 and 340 on Philippine Airlines?

Sorry, I don't know that. If they operate both types it is quite possible that is the case. Here in the UK we have A320/321 pilots flying the A332 for Monarch Airlines, MyTravel and Thomas Cook. It makes sense with such a short conversion to allow them to fly both types.

So I would guess the answer is probably yes.

Pilots in Cathay on the Airbus almost all start off on the A330 then get CCQed onto the A340 as well about a year later. Not many are only A340 qualified (Apart from Second Officers flying long haul only).
