J31; Flaps And Spoilers?

Thu May 29, 2003 6:05 am

Hi Fellows!

I am going on a trip in a Jetstream 31 and I wonder if you could tell me about how the flaps, and spoilers are used. Or maybe this little bird doesn´t have any?
How about the MTOW?
There only seats for 19 passengers.
Please tell me, I am only familiar with B747, B777 and A330 etc...

Best regards,

From memory the J31 has single slotted fowler flaps of quite a large area. No spoilers are fitted as flight idle on those big four bladed props makes the disks into big spoilers!

Watch for the lift dump on landing. WHen the crew brings the engines into reverse, the flaps dump to like 85 degrees! Fun to watch.

The flaps drop with no hydraulic pressure, so you can see the full extension:

Yep, that picture shows the flap "dump" position. Heres something of interest. If you spin the prop by hand, the prop drives the hudraulic pump and gives just enough pressure to move the flaps back up. Takes lots of revolutions though.... Maybe 20 seconds of hand propping the thing. That was a FUN airplane.

I just finished a trip with American Connection to Lafayette on the J-31. It was an amazing plane. Request the first row as there is no cockpit door and you can see all the procedures and such. Most interesting indeed!
