Rings On Radomes (not To Beat A Dead Horse)

Sat Jul 26, 2003 1:40 pm

Guys i know this is a constantly reappearing topic...

I was just talking to someone that said that the rings on the BA aircraft were part of the now pretty much defunct microwave landing system.. (im sure we can remember when flying magazine had articles about how it was the latest and greatest thing since slice bread and would we brave the microwave) He said the MLS was on trial @ LHR and BA aircraft had the black ring as a receiver for the signal... any one know if this is true/

Not true - its conductive paint to take a lightning strike from the radome to the main structure.

Don't know why only the 737s and 757s show it, or why it shows at all, because I understand it doesn't have to be black.

Looks pretty ugly in my opinion.
