Modifications To A32x For Dual Tandem?

Tue Jul 29, 2003 7:34 am

What sort of modifications did Airbus have to make to IC's A32x in order to allow for the dual tandem bogies?

What are the disadvantages?

Ever been done with the 737?

Very interesting! I'm curious to know myself. Maybe it allows for a heavier load? One obvious modification would be the enlargement of the wheel well.

It doesn't allow a heavier load on the airplane, but allows the same load to be distributed more lightly on runways. Many runway/taxiways will have load limitation based on the number of tires on the trucks.

One obvious modification would be the enlargement of the wheel well.

But that falls into my original questioning... did the wheel well even need enlargement? If not, then why not have it as an option on all A32x... which would give them [something of a] advantage over the 737 and its apparently limited wheel storage

Of course it would need enlarging. You would now need to fit 4 wheels instead of 2. You must remember that this is also extra weight that the aircraft must carry.

You also have twice the brakes and tires to maintain, and more spares would be required.

As I recall, it was/is an option on all A32x.
