Aircraft's Air Boats Or Life Boats, I Don't Know...

As all of us know, all of the aircrafts are equipped with a system of boats in the case an aircraft has to ditch in the ocean.

The other day, I was waiting for an aircraft at the gate, and the crew was opening the door and then all of the sudden the air boat erupted, with so much force the jet way bounced back 2 times, and all of the gate agents started to run away since it was entering the jetway with so much force.

I was asking my self why this happened.

Was it because the cabin was pressurized?

The slides on commercial aircraft can be "armed" to automatically deploy and inflate when the doors are opened. This is the normal condition for "flight", which is from the time the aircraft departs the boarding gate, until they are dis-armed at the arrival gate.

In this case, apparently the slides had not been disarmed prior to the aircraft door being opened, therefore they deployed and inflated. Even though there are checks and crosschecks in place to prevent this from happening, there is still an amazingly high number of inadvertent slide deployments yearly.

This means that there was an error of miscomunication betwen the crew of that flight?

Every time I receive an a/c at the gate, the flight crew is always ready to open the door.

But in this case it seemed that they did not have any comunication at all.

The only miscommunication would have been between the head, eyes, and the hands of the individual opening the door. It doesn't take more than one crewmember to blow a slide.
The person opening the door is responsible to ensure the slide isn't armed prior to opening the door. Someone either didn't follow the procedure or there is a chance that the girt bar (the bar which holds the slide to the aircraft while the passengers are evacuating) may have become hung up in one or both of the floor hooks. In that case the FA or whoever opened the door wouldn't have necessisarily known it was going to blow.
People have been seriously injured by inflating slides and there are specific procedures in place to ensure it doesn't happen inadvertently.

Airlines really try to grill it in to double check that doors are disarmed before opening. An inadvertant slide blow is VERY expensive. United's flight attendant recurrent training video from a few years back stated the problem they had with this happening on A320s (cause the door handle looks a lot like the arm/disarm handle on other planes). They said the cost of deflating & repacking an A319/A320 slide is around US$10,000.

Another occurrence that happened years ago (before the A320), not sure what kind of plane or where, but a gate agent opened a door at the jetway, that was armed, and the slide inflated inside the jetway, pinning & suffocating the agent to death.

Slides are very dangerous, despite their lifesaving purpose.
