How Do Pilots Talk With ATC And Ground Crew?

Hi, this is a question about the most specific things regarding communications in an aircraft. What specifically does a pilot do to communicate with the VHF or HF frequency? That is, how do they select on which radio they want to talk through, and how do they talk over the frequency? I was also wondering how the Ground call on the SELCAL panel works as well. I appreciate any information you can provide me, I find a strong interest in these sort of specific details of flying!

PS: How do you switch between "speaker-phone" and headset transmissions and adjust the volume?

What specifically does a pilot do to communicate with the VHF or HF frequency? That is, how do they select on which radio they want to talk through, and how do they talk over the frequency?

The pilot can select which radio he wants to transmit/receive through the ACP (Audio Control Panel). You can transmit through 3 different mode:
-Pressing a button on the ACP (PTT).
-Using an hand mike (not used in all planes)
-Pressing the button on the Yoke

I was also wondering how the Ground call on the SELCAL panel works as well

If you press the GROUND CALL switch a horn sound to alert ground personnel that pilots want to talk to them

The GROUND CALL light means pilots are called by ground personnel.

Since you have shown the 767 in your pictures:

The GND CALL switch (on the Pilots Call Panel but below the SELCAL row of switches and not assocaited with the system) is a switch which doubles up as a light:

GROUND CALL LIGHT (blue)

ILLUMINATED - accompanied by cockpit HI chime
- flight crew being called by ground personnel through APU Ground Control Panel
- extinguished after 30 seconds

GROUND CALL SWITCH (momentary action)

PUSH - sounds horn in nose wheel well to call ground personnel as long as the switch is held down

BOOM = Transmit from the boom microphone
MASK = Transmit from the Oxygen Mask microphone
I used to love the smell of Jet-A in the morning...

Rick, the ground call horn can be useful in places like Bali as goats and other animals seem unbothered by roaring CF-6s, but the horn scares them off....go figure!

Thanks AJ, that's one to remember as I go to Bali and Bombay! Had to stop taxying the other day as a dog was on the taxiway in BOM, and he just gave us a lazy look and slowly walked out of the way!!

Thanks everyone for your replys. So you select the radios through the Audio Control Panel (that's on the pedestal right?) and you transmit by pressing the PTT, or the button on the yoke. Where is that button on the yoke? I've seen the trims and A/P disconnect, but not the transmit button. I was also still wondering about the speakers vs. headset. Thanks in advance


PS: that horn thing is actually pretty funny, I think I've been asked that question many times: Do aircraft beep at other aircraft? It's like the "do aircraft have keys?" question. My friends will laugh when I tell them you guys have honked at goats!  Smile

All liners have 2 or even 3 ACP's (I think they are the same number of the VHF radio?)

Boeing uses to put all ACP's on the pedestal panel while Airbus uses to put 2 ACP's on the pedestal panel and the last one on the overhead panel.

Where is that button on the yoke? I've seen the trims and A/P disconnect, but not the transmit button

That button is located behind the yoke. It's almost impossible in a usual angle flightdeck photo to see it.
Airbus, on their sidesticks, has that button as well.

On this photo you can see the button I mention, just in front to the speaker.

I've heard the horn a few times, sometimes it's hard to hear over the roar of activity @ ATL. Threw me for a loop the first time I had a pilot use it.

Do they need to use the PTT when they are talking to the ground? I always had the impression that it it was more like a telephone where you could both just talk. Also, what is the cabin interphone like, a telephone type of system, or again, with a PTT? Could one of you pilots like Rick767 post a short item by item list that would be the normal steps a pilot would do during ground communications and/or cabin communications? That would be great.

Concorde 1518+Bio15,

The cabin interphone system and the the interphone to the engineer (I think) are both like a telephone. You can talk at the same time.

We chat to the ground engineer normally just before we push back. A typical conversation starts when I see on the door synoptic that all the doors are closed (Including various access hatches and cargo doors).

Pilot Flying (PF): Cockpit to ground.
Engineer (ENG): Go ahead.
PF: Confirm all doors checked closed and locked?
ENG: Confirm, all doors checked closed and locked.
PF: Are we cleared to pressurise?
ENG: Afirm, clear to pressurise.

(PNF then asks ATC for start and pushback clearance)
PF then turns on all relevent fuel pumps and pressurises the hydraulics and turns on the beacon. The START clecklist is completed.

PF:Cockpit to ground, clear for pushback to face north (or whatever)
ENG: Roger, clear to pushback to face north. Confirm park brake released.

(PF then checks that no doors are open by looking at the EICAS messages and seeing that only one remains - ENG SHUTDOWN. He/she then releases the parking brake)

PF: All doors checked closed and locked, brakes off time 58.
ENG: Roger, pushing back now, and cleared to start both.
PF: Roger.

After pushback.....By this time, the start should be complete and the AFTER START checklist complete

ENG: Ground to cockpit, pushback complete, set park brake.
PF: Park brake set, start is complete you are cleared to disconnect.
ENG: Roger, pin removed, clearance on the right hand side, bye bye.
PF: Bye bye.

Sometimes we need to start one engine on the bay with ground air etc..and that will involve more procedures.

As for calling the cabin, none of our procedures really specify that we have to call them using the cabin interphone expect some emergencies, and there is no specific wording we have to use, so that is normally very casual speak.
